There are two ways to use a trending sound and they produce completely different outcomes.
The first is to do the trend. Same audio, same format, same joke, your face. That gets you a small distribution bump and zero new followers, because nothing about it was yours.
The second is to use the sound as a container and put your own specific thing inside it. That one occasionally goes somewhere.
Timing matters more than people admit
A sound has roughly a week of real usefulness. By the time you have seen it four times on your own feed you are already late, and late means competing with a thousand better executions of the same idea.
The way to be early is not to scroll more. Tap the sound on any reel and look at how many videos have used it. Under about 10,000 is early. Over 100,000 and you are doing it for fun, not for reach.
Be specific to a degree that feels excessive
The trend gives you a shape. Your job is to fill it with something only you could say.
Generic: when you finally finish your to do list.
Specific: when you finish the brand deliverables at 11pm and remember you still have not invoiced anyone.
The second one is smaller. That is exactly why it works. Specific is what makes a person tag someone.
If your version could have been posted by any creator in your category, it will perform like a video by any creator in your category.
Keep the sound, change the frame
The easiest way to stand out inside a trend is to change one variable and leave everything else alone. Same audio, unexpected setting. Same format, opposite conclusion. Same joke, from the other side of the transaction.
That last one is a gift if you have any insider position at all. Everyone is doing the trend from the creator side. Do it from the brand side.
When to skip it entirely
If the sound does not fit what you are actually about, skip it. A feed full of unrelated trends reads as a person with no point of view, and that is the thing that makes you hard to describe in one sentence, which is the thing that makes you hard to book.
Trends are a tool for getting reach on an idea you already had. They are not a substitute for having one.
This week
Check the audio page before you use a sound. Under 10,000 uses, or do not bother.
Then write your version and ask one question. Could anyone else in my niche have posted this. If yes, make it smaller and more specific until the answer is no.
Before you go
If you’re getting gifted product and affiliate links but no paid partnerships, your follower count isn’t what’s holding you back. Creators smaller than you are getting paid right now. The difference is positioning, confidence, and knowing how the industry works from the brand side.
That’s what we cover at Brand Deal Camp, my 7-day experience for micro creators, January 11 to 17. You get six nights of fireside chats and six cabins of ten. Your trunk ships before camp starts.
Only 60 bunks are available, and doors close December 1.
